Metal Stamping

Use Metal Stamping tools for Metal Embossing and other Projects

Stamping (also known as pressing ) includes a variety of sheet-metal forming processes, such as punching using a machine press or stamping press machines. Even hammers are widely used when stamping on metal. These machines or hammer punching or pressing is commonly used with hard and thick metals, in which it is virtually impossible to leave any kind of impression on the metal when done by hand.

When thinking of Metal Stamping, in the case of soft and malleable laminated metals, like those used for Metal Embossing (Repoussé or Repujado), there is no need to worry about using force, machines or hammers. The gauge and temper of these metals, allow us to use a simple piece of suede to hand press different designs using stamping tools on metals such as copper, aluminum, silver, brass or pewter. Metal Stamping is done by placing the metal on the suede, which is the soft surface that allows us to leave a nice definition of the stamping tool’s design on the metal. The stamping tool is then pressed against the metal while swiveling it (make sure you do not turn the stamping tool because it may move and therefore miss to leave a nice design or stamp on the chosen metal).

Metal Stamping ToolsWe carry several stamping tools for the metal stamping technique on soft malleable metals of certain gauge. They can be used on soft pewter, aluminum, copper, silver and brass. You can also try them on foil, but beware not to press too hard as you may break or tear the foil. For achieving the best detailed design through metal stamping, remember to place the metal on suede and press the stamping tool against the metal. The softness of the suede will allow the design to leave a deep impression on the metal.

Some people use softer materials like foam mats and “mouse pads” but we do not recommend these for metal stamping, as they can be too soft and create unwanted wrinkles and bumps on the metal.

You can also use these metal stamping tools in your polymer clay and metal clay projects. The softness of the clay allows to leave a perfect and well defined shape of the stamping tool's pattern. The size of these tools is ideal for jewelry, beads and small projects and designs.

In addition to clay, these metal stamping tools can also be used to add some small details on your Gelli Plate prints.
